Lakeland Alliance partners with the Centre for Sustainable Watersheds and the Canadian Wildlife Federation to improve the shoreline health of two local area lakes

For immediate release:

Peterborough, ON – The Lakeland Alliance has partnered with the Centre of Sustainable Watersheds (CSW) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) to assess the shoreline health of Chandos Lake and Lake Kasshabog through the Love Your Lake program.
Love Your Lake is a shoreline survey and stewardship program that provides shoreline property owners with resources to help improve the health of their shoreline and their lake. This program is developed by CSW and CWF, who work with regional partners and lake associations to deliver it locally.

North Kawartha Council Meeting

NEWS FLASH

With a packed gallery and standing room only, everything went exactly as predicted at North Kawartha Council meeting today with Developer Ron Dick urging Council:

!) to prepare a draft zoning by-law;
2) to grant the go-ahead on the lots given the OK by the provincial archeological stage I & II report; and
3) to ask for the statutory public meeting to be held Saturday August 23rd 1pm at the Wilson Park Community Centre.

Led to believe by the Developer and his consultants that most everything was “in order”, Council failed to ask the difficult questions or delay their response to the requests until staff could pursue more information. It was like a well-rehearsed dance that went as planned.

The job of the FRIENDS was to observe and witness. That was our goal and we achieved it!

Thanks to the “Friends” and the friends of the “Friends” that came to implement this second public step in our strategy. Kudos to all!

Lakeland Conference

LAKELAND CONFERENCE

Excellent presentation from Gary Nielsen – Climate Change Program Coordinator, Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). Stunning data and stunning slides! These are the folks, the likes of Gary, that we need to explain “ecoscience 101”. UNFORTUNATELY, due to the one-window-protocol introduced by then-ON-premier Mike Harris in the late 1990s, MoE & MNR expertise is side-lined in deference to planning/development priorities. This must change and is already starting to be recognized, eg 2014 PPS and increasing citizen
awareness of the importance of climate change and its impact on ecosystems. Political decisions are often short-term and that, too, must change as we
commit to a future of respect and sustainability for future genrations and a shared existence on the planet. Next topics: ECOSYSTEM INTEGRITY, MNR/MoE-informed sustainability and resilience policies and political decisions: this is the responsible path forward!

“One day in May 1999, our founding board met to discuss the future of the land they loved. Having witnessed the loss of important natural places and foreseeing the farmlands, wetlands, grasslands, rivers, lakes and streams of the Kawarthas at risk for future generations, they decided to do something….”

“….The Association of Stony Lake Cottagers is a group of seasonal and permanent residents who seek to advance the recreational, environmental and other shared interests of Ston(e)y Lakers….”

”….Wetlands in the southern part of the Province and on our lakes were rapidly disappearing due to development – a total of 70 percent wetland loss over the previous few decades. This concern was shared by what was then the Ston(e)y Lake Environment Council, which was working to try to protect the lake environment….”
